I decided that story-wise this would be the best place to input a scene where British Intelligence reaches out to Annabelle. Also, I wanted to make it as clique as possible – trench coat, hat, and together it makes an overall suspicious person who definitely looks like a spy. On top of all of that, I wanted him to be very stuck up, not that I see British people that way. He was just the unfortunate British Intelligence agent who ended up like that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, if you notice, the best part of all of this is that the stereotypical “spy gear” we normally think about was actually common during that time. It was fashionable to wear. Still, it was May and not that cold, so all of those layers must’ve been uncomfortable. He was probably the only one still wearing his trench coat. Maybe that’s how he was out of place?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Super Qualified!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Not to far into this chapter Annabelle’s credentials are revealed. She’s quadrilingual, being fluent in English, German, French, and Spanish. She explains this is because she needs to talk to people of other nationalities when doing interviews. Most of this comes from her growing up with German in the house, French in her country, studying in England, and, well, I guess Spanish is a curveball. Maybe she vacationed there? I added that last one merely for my benefit. However, it is actually not unusual for people in France to know 3 or more languages (I looked it up). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
On top of all of this Annabelle had gone to University (don’t know which one, but somewhere in England), owns one of the largest newspaper companies in Northern France (way to go Actualit\u00e9s Dietmar<\/em>), and is also only 27. Yes, 27. Why did I make her kind of young? I don’t know – I just chose a random number that sounded feasible with all of these accomplishments and add to why it seemed her resume was so “impressive”. <\/p>\n\n\n\n That is perhaps my favorite line of the book. I thought it was so funny! <\/p>\n\n\n\n It only seemed right to ease into the conversation and help you to understand what Annabelle is like with some banter between her and the British guy. Adding in that personal side Annabelle that hasn’t been seen yet also helps with character development. You get to know the witty, optimistic Annabelle from before the war. It’s kind of the opposite of the depressed and broken Annabelle from the second chapter. She hasn’t yet been through all of that trauma – she’s still got an optimistic look at the war. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Okay, hate to burst any bubbles here, but I pretty much made this whole codebook situation using Mein Kampf <\/em>completely out of thin air. Maybe it happened, but I have yet to find any evidence it did. However, codebooks did exist but it wasn’t smart to carry them with you. You could be captured at any point and then bam! Everything you have been trying to keep a secret has now been exposed! <\/p>\n\n\n\n So, Annabelle being told to burn the book once she wrote down the main phrases. This was my ingenious way of creating a code they could communicate through. She writes down these key phrases in her papers and can send basic info that way. Then there’s also the communique they get through the radio and special messengers. Ta-da! Now there’s a system in place!<\/p>\n\n\n\n With the last two paragraphs of this chapter, I begin to finally make clear what Annabelle’s secret job is and how it all works. This is also the first time where I describe what the downstairs basement looks like. I don’t really revisit it too often in the book – Annabelle’s focus is upstairs. We’ll learn more of what happens downstairs in the sequel \ud83d\ude01.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Well, that’s all folks! We’ve made it to and through Chapter 3! Next week, we’ll get into Chapter 4: Young!<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n P.s. – last week, someone asked me why there was a tub in her bathroom. I honestly have no real answer. I just drew it there not really thinking about the logistics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Also, the same person asked me why Annabelle didn’t just stay there if she had a full bathroom. Well, I don’t really know either. Maybe it’s because she didn’t want to live in fear? She didn’t want to just hide away in her office. Also, there was no bed at all there, so it wouldn’t be very fun to stay there overnight.
