Believe it or not, but we are now at chapter 5! Crazy, right? Let’s get to it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Introduction of the Gestapo<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This chapter is perhaps the first instance where we get to see the interactions between the Gestapo and the Actualit\u00e9s Dietmar<\/em> employees. The reader is finally able to see some details about how often the Gestapo visited and what exactly they did. In addition to this, the amount of employees at Actualit\u00e9s Dietmar<\/em> is revealed to the audience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

My idea behind having the Gestapo socialize with the female employees came from a couple of articles I saw while researching. I saw a couple of images for leaflets given to German soldiers to find places within the city to enjoy themselves and spend time when off duty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • \"\"<\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

    It very much gave me a sense that the Nazis felt right at home during the occupation and believed everything there was theirs for the taking. This is mostly why the Gestapo in the book both have their brutal and investigative presentation, but also, this more carefree and entitled side. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Introducing Emmerich<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Enter our favorite Nazi to hate: Kapit\u00e4n Emmerich. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This is the very first chapter in which Kapit\u00e4n Emmerich appears. He’ll pop up in more chapters later on. For now, though, he’s introduced a meticulous Gestapo officer, always trying to find something wrong with Annabelle’s business – and Annabelle. It is mentioned that he constantly picks away at her character and manner of dress, hoping to find something. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    That’s about all that is shared at this time. More will come soon, but for now, let’s move on to our next Nazi Kapit\u00e4n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Kapit\u00e4n (Albrecht) Fitzi<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Technically, his first name isn’t introduced yet, but it’s ok; the name is not the most important thing at this point. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Albrecht is introduced as a quiet sort of person. More of an introvert. Now, to Annabelle, that can only mean one thing: he’s hiding something big. She believes that he is secretly observing her. While he isn’t outright questioning what she does, she knows he’s watching her every move. He’s cool and calculated in his actions. He’s a person who’s going to deceive her into giving up secrets. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    To quickly summarize: Annabelle thinks Albrecht is everything Emmerich is but internalized. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Oh, just wait and see what Albrecht is truly hiding behind his calm, collected nature!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Interrogation Time!<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    Think about the typical interrogation scenes you often see in movies and television. Below are some examples from older tv shows and movies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • \"\"<\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

      Now, these are more like suspects being taken into a police station. In Annabelle’s situation, she’s in her office, but the atmosphere remains much the same. Notice how there’s a light shining into the lady’s face in the picture on the right. Think back to my description of the interrogation scene in Defy. That’s one detail that I added after seeing it in pop culture, mainly in various historical fiction films and television (though not the scenes above). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      One other element to note is the darkness of the scenes. Yes, I know, it’s in black and white. However, that’s not what I’m pointing to. There’s one main light source in each scene (forgoing the understanding there are more lights behind the camera for filming purposes). This leaves the room rather dark and the suspect in the spotlight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Focusing on the actual scene in the book, Annabelle finds herself in a similar situation to the lady on the right. Within a matter of seconds, the blackout curtains are drawn, a light shown in her face, and was being interrogated by a Nazi SS. Officer. Wow, talk about intimidation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Big Reveal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

      Halfway through the interrogation, the big reveal comes! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Albrecht is actually secretly working for the British! WHAT?!!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Unbelievable, right? It certainly takes Annabelle by surprise. In her shock, Annabelle has difficultly keeping her cover and not exposing herself. However, had Albrecht been lying, she would have definitely been put in jail… oops. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Anywho, Annabelle finally believes in Albrecht when he tells her the secret code. The line is actually in Mein Kempf. I found it like at the beginning of my research because I wanted to actually have a secret code based on reality. No, I didn’t scan every line of the book to find one specific phrase – that would’ve been tedious and very unenjoyable. Instead, I found a chapter about something like national pride and came across this line. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      In English, it translates to: “the deep appreciation of nostalgia caused by forced exile.” It’s not much but seemed like it could be an interesting quote to be their secret code. The coded message, as stated in Defy<\/em>, is: “you’re safe.” It would be one way that spies could confirm their identities to one another. In many instances, someone could infiltrate an organization and pose as an ally. To avoid making the terrible accident of trusting the wrong person, codes were often created to confirm one’s identity. Cool, right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n\n\n\n

      My favorite line comes at the very end. It’s like a call back to the last chapter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      “Maybe, she wasn’t completely alone.<\/em>“<\/h5>\n\n\n\n

      Do you feel the chills? I certainly do!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      And that’s where we end for today! Chapter 5 is in the books! Woohoo!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Next week’s blog will be about Chapter 6 or maybe a surprise topic. I’m not entirely sure yet. I consider the first five chapters their own little sub-set within Defy. <\/em>These were the first chapters I wrote and, initially, was the entire book. Yes, five chapters. A whole book. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      My idea actually was to have 15 chapters, the first five focusing on Annabelle, the next five on Dimitri, and the last five on Albrecht. I actually started writing like that but decided against it. The chapters I had written for Dimitri are now in my next book, Resist.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n\n\n
