A Play About… Something?

Howdy folks! Been a hot minute and in that time, I’ve been working on a few smaller projects. One of them I’m very excited to be sharing with everyone finally and on Sunday, April 7th, it was performed for the first time! Yes, you read that right – performed.

If you guess that I’ve been working on a play, then you’d be right! I wrote and directed (and even had a small part in it too!) a play that was performed by a club at my university and I’m happy to be sharing it with you! So, let’s get to it!

What is “A Play About… Something?”

Here’s a brief overview of the play:

What happens to stories when the Author forgets she’s writing them? Well, they come alive, of course! These stories have been forgotten so long and now they’re coming alive in the hard drive of the Author’s computer! What hilarities will they come up with? “A Play About… Something” is a one-act play that explores this secret world of the Author’s Hard Drive written by student L.A. Grabins; join this fun adventure into what must be going on inside of a computer’s hard drive when we’re not looking!

Who Are the Characters?

The cast of characters included a bunch of characters from a variety of genres and I had so much fun coming up with some backstories for them! It was especially fun to see how the actors in the show took these characters and made them their own! The character list is as follows:

  • Daisy Muller
  • Frank Musgrove
  • Stud Muffin
  • Cupcake
  • Percy Cooke
  • Corgi
  • Duke
  • Pearl Stone
  • Love Rival
  • Woman (From 20 and Eligible)
  • Warrior 1 (Stanley)
  • Warrior 2 (Bob)
  • Ben
  • Rose
  • Hazmat Suit Man
  • The Author

The main 4 characters that appeared the most and were the key characters that led the adventure were Daisy, Frank, Stud Muffin, and Cupcake. Everyone else pops in and out of the play as they wander into new places and help the main characters explore new areas.

In our production, I had the lovely honor of taking on the mantle of “Hazmat Suit Man” hehehe….

What are the “books”?

Now, before you try to search these “books” up, know that they are 100% MADE UP! Maybe it would’ve been easier to use books that the audience knew to do my first One-Act Play, but then again, it wouldn’t have fit in with the plot and I would’ve been perilously close to having issues with copywrite. So, instead, I created “books” that “the Author” wrote and forgot about, and honestly, they’re not far off from being true to exactly what I do as an author and maybe someday, if I focus up enough, then maybe they’ll become real books.

Here are the books and who belongs in them!

  • The Whisper in the Wind – A 1939 Period Drama starring Daisy Muller and Frank Musgrove
  • The Stud Muffin and Cupcake – A Kids book that failed but starred Stud Muffin and Cupcake
  • The Case of the Prized Corgi – A detective novel in 1920’s London starring Percy Cooke and the Corgi
  • Dearest Duke – a rip off of Pride and Prejudice starring Pearl Stone, Duke and Love Rival
  • Warrior’s Duel – AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH starring Warrior 1 & Warrior 2
  • Twenty and Eligible – “Now the Author is sounding desperate” starring The Woman
  • Conjured Plague – Based on plague of 2020… Ope. Starring Hazmat Suit Man
  • *Nothing* – Dystopian Novel, with foundations in the song, “The Year 2525” by Exordium and Terminus. Stars Ben and Rose (twin protagonists).

Where Can I Watch?

Thankfully we were able to livestream the show and it’s on YouTube for people to enjoy! I’ll insert it here for everyone to take a look, so if you’d like you can check it out! There was a pre-show performance of “Confessional Skit”, which was another student work, which was a hoot to watch!

“A Night of Student Works”

Now You Know What I’ve Been Up to!

I’m still working on my next book, as it is currently with the editors at the moment and it’ll be a hot sec before I get it out on the market, but we’re getting there! In the meantime, I’m focusing a lot on school and also another creative project!

Talk to y’all soon!

Creatively Yours,

L.A. Grabins
